What is a MOOC?

2. Typical MOOCs

3. summary

What is a MOOC?

MOOC, also known as MOOCS, is the official name of theMassive Open Online Course. The result is the following.

As the name suggests, it is a platform service that allows you to take large courses online andAnyone with Internet access can attend lectures at prestigious universities (basically) for free. This is why they became popular, mainly in the United States. Some of the courses include not only lectures but also tests and assignments after attending the lectures to obtain the qualification for completion.

MOOC is a platform service, so each university does not set up its own service, but uses the platform of "MOOC Consortium" or "MOOC Provider" as an intermediary.

Nowadays, not only universities but also companies seem to be participating and offering lectures, so in a broad sense, it seems that it can be regarded simply as "online courses". (In this page, we mainly focus on university-level online courses.

Representative MOOCs

▼Coursera.
https://www.coursera.org/
Courses from famous universities such as Stanford University in the U.S. are available.

▼edX
https://www.edx.org/
It was launched by a collaboration between Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University.

▼Udacity
https://www.udacity.com/nanodegree
This MOOC specializes in programming and other computer science fields.

Summary

MOOCs have created a learning opportunity where anyone can take university-level lectures without going to university, as long as they have access to the Internet.
In fact, there was a news that a 15-year-old student from Mongolia got an excellent grade in edX course and went on to MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). However, the completion rate of MOOCs is very low because of the low hurdle. The completion rate of MOOCs seems to be low because it depends on the motivation of the learner and the service has a strong self-learning nature.

However, in the form of industry-academia collaboration, MOOC courses created in collaboration with the world's top companies such as "Google" and "Facebook" are also being developed, and lectures on cutting-edge technologies such as AI, data science, and automated driving, which are currently the focus of attention, are increasing. It seems that the number of lectures on cutting-edge technologies such as AI, data science, and automated driving, which are currently the focus of attention, will continue to increase.

Also, as Edtech services like MOOCs spread in the US, the way of learning in school education is changing. In the next article, I would like to write about the impact on school education. In the next issue, I would like to write about the impact on school education.
We look forward to working with you again next time.

Bibliography: The Future Changed by Edtech Author: Masahiro Sato

The Beginning of MOOCs in the U.S. [e-Learning Around the World] Hello.
